According to the 2023 report on the Quality of Living for expats by Mercer, Vienna is the world's top city for expats and their families.
Mercer, who is a leading global company in transforming work, retirement, investment outcomes, and promoting health and well-being, has released its latest report on the Quality of Living for expatriates and their families living and working abroad. Vienna has once again secured the top position in this year's city ranking, closely followed by Zurich in second place, with Auckland and Copenhagen claiming the third and fourth spots. Geneva completes the top five, showcasing Switzerland's reputation for offering an exceptional quality of life.
Yvonne Traber, Partner and Global Mobility Leader at Mercer, stated that countries with a high quality of living provide their citizens and expatriates with excellent healthcare, education, infrastructure, social services, and affordable housing.
Among the world's largest cities with populations over ten million, Paris, New York City, and London all rank in the top 20% of cities overall. However, these cities, despite being popular among expats, often face infrastructure challenges due to their size. Ms. Traber also highlighted that the current global landscape, including geopolitical turmoil, natural disasters, and economic challenges, significantly impacts a city's ability to attract and retain talent.
Many employees are now reassessing their priorities and considering the quality of life offered to them and their families in their current locations. This information is crucial for employers and employees when making decisions about international assignments.
In response to the growing interest in sustainability, Mercer has also ranked the most environmentally-friendly cities in the world, with Canberra, Oslo, Adelaide, Helsinki, and Ottawa receiving high rankings for their recent sustainability efforts.
Vienna continues to beat world-famous rankings, thanks to its high quality of living, making it a highly appealing destination to relocate to. It is worth noting that the capital was rated the most livable city by the Economist Intelligence Unit in 2022 and 2023. Residents of Vienna can enjoy the affordable prices, public transport and the cleanliness of the city, amongst much more.
