By 2027, the third terminal at Vienna Airport will see an expansion of 70,000 sq. m, in addition to 30 new F&B venues.
The expansion of Terminal 3 was originally planned for completion in 2023, however, it was delayed due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Construction is now set to commence next month, with the ground-breaking ceremony scheduled for February 14. The completion of this ambitious project is expected in 2027.
Once completed, the expansion will add an impressive 70,000 sq. m of space to the existing terminal building. Passengers can look forward to the inclusion of comfortable waiting and lounge areas, as well as additional bus gates. Moreover, the expansion will introduce more than 30 new shopping and restaurant outlets.
One of the notable advantages of this extension is the improved transfer connections between gates F, G, and D. Passengers will enjoy convenient and seamless transfers, eliminating any potential hassle or confusion. Additionally, the expansion will centralize security checks in the new building.
The announcement regarding the Terminal 3 expansion coincides with Vienna Airport reporting its second-highest annual traffic figures in history. In 2023 alone, the airport served a staggering 29.5 million passengers. This remarkable achievement highlights the increasing popularity of Vienna as a travel hub.
London emerged as the most sought-after Western European destination for flights from Vienna in the previous year. However, long-haul flights to Bangkok, New York, and Taipei also experienced a significant rise in demand, securing their positions as the top three long-haul destinations from the airport.
Julian Jager, a member of the management board of Flughafen Wien AG, the airport operating company, expressed his thoughts on this exciting news. He emphasized that the strong desire to travel, which only increased following the Covid-19 pandemic, has continued to drive the upswing in passenger volume at Vienna Airport. With 29.5 million travelers, the airport achieved the second-highest passenger results in its entire history, reaching an impressive 93.3% of the level generated in 2019.
Jager also highlighted the airport's commitment to providing exceptional handling services. Vienna Airport has earned recognition as the most punctual hub in the Lufthansa Group and the third most punctual hub in Europe. Furthermore, it is ranked 11th among more than 500 airports worldwide in the ‘best airports’ rating by the British consulting company, Skytrax.
