Events in Vienna in August, 2023

In August 2023, the city of Vienna will host a plethora of cultural and entertainment events from open-air film screenings and classical music concerts, to beer festivals and beach volleyball tournaments. Families with children can also visit the puppet theatre and children’s film screenings.

Festivals

There will be many festivals in Vienna this August, including art, film, and music festivals, as well as food and beverage tasting festivals. Many of these take place annually and are free to attend.

Kultursommer

Kultursommer is a summer culture festival in outdoor venues all over Vienna. There are many artists performing across all types of genres – cabaret, literature, music, performance art, dance, theatre, and circus arts.

There will be more than 500 performances with over 2,000 artists that you can attend in 2023. Most of the events will take place in the evening, though there are morning events for families with children. The festival program can be found online at kultursommer.wien.

A highly anticipated performance in the world of literature is a reading of Maria Muhar’s debut novel, Lento Violento, with musical accompaniment by B.Visible. This event will take place on August 6 at 18:30 at Wasserturm Favoriten.

One of the festival’s most striking theatre productions will be ChatGPT gone wild by D#AVANTGARDE. The play, dedicated to the world of chatbots and artificial intelligence, will be on August 4 at 18:30 at Wasserturm and again on August 5 at 18:30 at Mortarapark.

Afrika-Tage Wien 2023

The 19th annual Africa Days in Vienna festival celebrates African culture through music and other arts, fashion, entertainment, and gastronomy. Afrika-Tage Wien 2023 lasts for 18 days. Here are some notable things to do and see:

  1. Contemporary and traditional music concerts featuring Petaw Band, Nneka, Bombino and other famous artists.
  2. A bazaar where you can buy handiworks from African artisans, and food stalls offering African foods, beverages, and cocktails.
  3. A chill lounge.
  4. Drum and dance classes.

There will be a creative program, To Africa and Back, organised for children.

Event location: Donauinsel, Floridsdorfer Brücke.

Admission: starts at EUR 12. Admission is free on Mondays and for children up to age 12. Schoolchildren, university students, and people with special needs can get half-priced tickets.

Film Festival at the Rathausplatz

This open air cinema will feature previously recorded performances and concerts for all to watch. This will be particularly interesting to music lovers of the following genres: opera, classical, pop, rock, jazz, and musicals.

The screenings will take place every evening. You can find the daily program online at filmfestival-rathausplatz.at.

In addition to the pleasant aesthetics, there will be gastronomic delights for all to enjoy. The Rathausplatz has a designated dining area featuring 26 food stalls offering food from all over the world

Calle Libre Festival 2023

The 10th annual street art and music festival will take place in Vienna’s 16th district, Ottakring, over a 10-day period. Local and international artists will paint 10 walls that can be found in the following locations:

  • Friedrich-Kaiser-Gasse 32;
  • Koppstraße 89-93;
  • Abelegasse 29;
  • Thalhaimergasse 9-15;
  • Hippgasse 17;
  • Arltgasse 16;
  • Wattgasse 11;
  • Sandleitengasse 9/13;
  • Ottakringer Pl. 1.

On August 4 and 5, Calle Libre Festival 2023 will host a music festival for hip-hop and electronic music lovers. Gola Gianni, Donna Savage, EINMUSIK, Xique-Xique and many more are scheduled to perform.

Date and time of event: from July 27 to August 5, daily from 8.00 to 18.00

Event location: Ottakring, the music festival will be at the Ottakringer Platz brewery

Admission: free, the music festival starts at EUR 20

Ottakringer Bierfest

This annual beer festival features more than 20 types of beer and takes place at the massive Ottakringer city brewery in the 16th district. The front courtyard will be transformed into a lively outdoor marketplace.

It’s not just a place to drink beer and eat snacks. On Fridays, you can come watch live bands play and on Tuesdays you can have fun doing beer yoga. Brewery tours are available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Veganmania Danube Island 2023

The largest street food festival is set to take place over three days. Visitors will be able to feast on vegan dishes from Austrian and international cuisines.

You can also take a class on how to prepare vegan bath bombs or enjoy a musical performance by any of the featured musicians, such as The SugarCoats, Emma-Mo, Stick A Bush, AnRainer and Mary Jane’s Soundgarden.

Date and time of event: August 25 from 14.00 to 21.00, August 26 from 10.00 to 21.00, August 27 from 10.00 to 19.00

Event location: the area under the lighthouse next to the U1 Donauinsel station

ImPulsTanz 2023

ImPulsTanz is the largest contemporary dance festival in Europe. The program includes:

  • performances by Austrian and international artists;
  • a presentation of research projects and books;
  • 210 dance workshops.

Gürtel nightwalk

Gürtel nightwalk is a night musical festival that will take place on Gürtel road for the 25th time. Stars such as B72 ffio, Laikka, CHELSEA Hypnotic Floor, and Peter Hein will perform on the open air stages set up along the road. The festival program with the list of performances and venues can be found online at guertelnightwalk.at.

In honour of the festival’s 25th anniversary, there will be an exhibition dedicated to its history available for people to visit. A night market featuring designers and artists showcasing their work will be set up for the first time ever at Gürtel nightwalk.

Classical music concerts

Throughout the month of August, the Wiener Mozart Orchester will be performing concerts on stage at the Vienna Philharmonic. You can enjoy the performances of selected works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

On August 6, at 15:00, the Philharmonic will host a free concert by Shuanghan Li and other musicians. It will feature works by Enrique Granados, Niccolo Paganini, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, as well as other world-renowned composers.

On August 20, at 19:30, Wiener KammerOrchester will perform masterpieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Frederic Chopin and more.

Exhibitions

In August 2023, several themed exhibitions will be held in Vienna. These will feature masterpieces of fine art, a popular science exhibit and much more.

BioInspiration

The BioInspiration exhibition at the Technical Museum of Vienna focuses on biomimicry – engineering and design solutions inspired by nature. It features more than 200 exhibits, medi installations, and interactive exhibits. Visitors here can see examples from both antiquity and modern variants of biomimicry in the fields of architecture, medicine, transportation, engineering, robotics, and more.

Painting exhibition AMAZING: THE WÜRTH COLLECTION

The Leopold Museum is hosting Austria’s first ever exhibition of artworks from the Würth collection – one of the largest private collections in Europe. Two hundred of the 20,000 artworks in the collection will be featured in the exhibition.

Two floors have been allocated for the viewing of the exhibition. On the first level, there will be masterpieces of classical modernism, including works by Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, René Magritte, and more. Two separate rooms will house paintings by Max Beckmann and Pablo Picasso.

The second level will be dedicated to contemporary art. Here you can see the works by Fernando Botero, Gerhard Richter, and others. Works by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Georg Baselitz and Anselm Kiefer will be shown in separate rooms.

Film screenings

Every year, an open air summer film theatre opens in the Augartenspitz park with modern and classic films being shown every evening. Silent films are shown with live musical accompaniment.

You can visit the Grünstern garden kitchen, located on the park grounds, and indulge in culinary delights.

Family- and child-friendly events

Families with children can attend exciting film screenings and puppet shows. These are age-appropriate and some are even free of charge.

Children's Opera Festival

The Children's Opera Festival is part of the Rathausplatz film festival. The children’s program includes opera films and popular children’s musical productions. The following are shown on Fridays at 17:00:

  • August 4 — The Small Moments, a screening of short films for children ages 4 and up;
  • August 11 — Ruhe! Zumdonnerwetternochmal! and Patchwork;
  • August 18 — Fantasia;
  • August 25 — Moody Booty and Help! Help! The Globolinks.

The Magic Flute for Children

The Magic Flute for Children is an open air puppet show for children ages 3 and up. In the story, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself introduces his own opera to the young audience. He tells a fairy tale about a young prince named Tamino who sets out to rescue the kidnapped Pamina, the Night Queen’s daughter. The prince uses a magical flute to help him overcome evil along the way.

Date and time of event: August 4-6, 11-13, 18, 20, and 25-27 at 17.30.
