The expansion of the U2 metro line is due for completion in September 2024

The section of the U2 line between Rathaus and Karlsplatz, which is planned to reopen in autumn 2023, will be completed by the end of 2024, as stated by Wiener Linien.

April 17, 2023

The part of the U2 metro line, which has been closed for development since mid-2021, was expected to reopen in autumn 2023, however this has been postponed by one year, according to Wiener Linien. The expansion project is called U2xU5 and encompasses the extension of the U2 line to the south and building a new U5 line. Both of these lines will interconnect at the Rathaus, the City Hall station.

The project requires development in sensitive districts, including the capital's centre. The U2 line will extend southward through Neubaugasse, Pilgramgasse, and Wienerberg, whilst U5 will go through Vokstheater, Museumsquartier, and Karlsplatz, before continuing northward to Hernals. Since June 2021, the previously-mentioned 3 metro stations have been closed to the general public as they are being converted into the U5 tube.

According to Wiener Linien, the U2 will start running from Seestadt to Karlsplatz again from the beginning of the school year in 2024. More than 90% of the work on the Schottentor-Karlsplatz section is done and is on schedule, nevertheless, the area under Universitätsstrasse near Schottentor has been causing a delay. It is not yet clear if additional expenses will be incurred amidst the 1-year postponement.

At the Rathaus, Volkstheater, Museumsquartier and Karlsplatz stations, the platforms have already been reconstructed, and 144 platform screen doors have been installed. At the same time, work on the new tunnels at the Frankhplatz station will begin in early May.
